The Miami Marlins placed right-hander John McMillon on the 15-day injured list on Thursday due to right elbow tightness, just a day after he was injured on his second pitch during a relief appearance.
McMillon, 26, allowed a single to Pittsburgh’s Nick Gonzales in the third inning on Wednesday before exiting without facing another batter in the Pirates’ 3-1 win.
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker expressed concern about the injury, especially given how late in the season it is, noting that McMillon had been a valuable bullpen asset. An MRI was scheduled for later that Thursday.
McMillon has posted a 2-1 record with a 1.50 ERA, five walks, and 13 strikeouts over 12 innings in 10 relief appearances during his first season with the Marlins. He made his major league debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2023, where he held a 2.25 ERA in four innings.
In other roster moves, the Marlins activated right-hander Michael Petersen, selected the contract of righty Jeff Lindgren from Triple-A Jacksonville, and designated lefty Jonathan Bermudez for assignment.
Petersen, 30, was picked off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and is a towering 6-foot-7 rookie. In 11 relief appearances with the Dodgers, he posted a 3-0 record with a 6.43 ERA, eight walks, and 11 strikeouts in 14 innings. Schumaker praised Petersen’s powerful 97-99 mph fastball and aggressive approach on the mound.
Bermudez, 28, suffered his first defeat in Wednesday’s game, where he started against the Pirates. He has a 0-1 record with an 8.10 ERA, two walks, and four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings across three appearances (one start) this season.
Lindgren, set to turn 28, made three appearances for the Marlins in 2023, recording a 5.14 ERA with four walks and one strikeout over seven innings. He was 2-5 with a 6.19 ERA across 24 games (11 starts) in Double-A and Triple-A this year.
