The winless Indianapolis Colts, led by second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson, are looking to secure their first victory of the season against the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon. As anticipation builds for the matchup, Bears defenders have downplayed Richardson’s abilities, likening him to “any dual-threat college quarterback,” dismissing his readiness for professional-level competition.

Richardson’s second NFL season has been a mixed bag so far. He has shown flashes of brilliance with deep touchdown passes, but his performances have also been marred by inconsistency, including overthrown interceptions that have led to polarizing opinions among fans. His playstyle presents a “boom or bust” scenario for defenses. Richardson can make explosive plays but also runs the risk of costly mistakes, creating both excitement and concern for Colts fans.

Bears defenders are clearly banking on Richardson’s inconsistency as they prepare for Week 3. Some have even taunted the young quarterback, challenging him to throw deep against their defense. In interviews earlier this week, Bears safety Jaquan Brisker expressed eagerness to face Richardson, specifically hoping for a chance to intercept a deep pass.

“I definitely want him to throw deep this week,” Brisker said. “I mean, if he can, please throw it my way. I want a pick this week. Regardless of whether it’s short or long, we want the opportunity.”

Richardson had some trouble against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, where he threw several errant passes, which likely fueled the Bears’ confidence going into this matchup. However, it’s possible that the Colts may opt for a more conservative game plan in Week 3, particularly as they continue to chase their first win. Richardson’s dynamic skill set can be a double-edged sword, and the Colts may try to reduce the risks by focusing more on shorter passes and utilizing his mobility.

The Bears have already faced two AFC South teams this season, experiencing mixed results. They won against the Tennessee Titans but fell short in a primetime matchup against the Houston Texans. Despite the taunts from Chicago’s defense, this week’s game presents an excellent opportunity for Indianapolis to notch their first win, as both teams are still in the early stages of their development.

One factor that could heavily influence the game is how well Richardson utilizes his mobility. Keeping the Bears’ offense, led by rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, off the field will be crucial for the Colts. Williams, the first overall pick, has yet to throw a touchdown pass in his debut NFL season. To minimize Williams’ chances, Richardson will need to extend drives, run down the clock, and manage the game’s pace.

Bears defensive lineman Montez Sweat anticipates a run-heavy approach from the Colts, noting that Richardson’s mobility, combined with the powerful running game led by Jonathan Taylor, poses a real threat. Establishing the ground game will be vital for Indianapolis to control the tempo and increase their chances of winning.

Richardson and the Colts will take the field at Lucas Oil Stadium at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon, aiming for their first victory. If they can leverage Richardson’s dual-threat abilities while minimizing mistakes, this could be the game where they finally break into the win column. The Bears’ defense may be confident, but Richardson has the tools to challenge them if he can balance aggression with smart decision-making.
