The Cleveland Browns face a critical decision regarding quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has yet to live up to expectations after being acquired at a steep cost. Watson, who signed the largest fully guaranteed contract in NFL history, has struggled both on and off the field, causing frustration within the organization and among fans. In the Browns’ recent game against the New York Giants, Watson made a costly error on a crucial fourth-and-1 play, which contributed to their loss. With 3:56 left on the clock, Cleveland only needed three feet to secure a first down. The offense set up a play with four wide receivers and Watson alongside running back Jerome Ford. The Giants adjusted to man coverage, leaving Watson with a clear opportunity on the right side of his line.

However, Watson inexplicably missed tight end Jordan Akins, who was wide open after running underneath a rub route from receiver Jerry Jeudy. Instead of taking the easy play, Watson hesitated, resulting in a missed chance to secure the first down. This mistake adds to a growing list of concerns for Cleveland, especially when considering Watson’s $230 million guaranteed contract and his underwhelming performances to date.

While Watson’s off-field issues, including allegations of sexual misconduct from 25 women, have been a significant source of controversy, his on-field play has also been lackluster. Injuries and inconsistency have hindered his performance, raising questions about his future with the team. Given the high cost of keeping Watson on the roster and his ongoing struggles, the Browns may need to consider whether he should remain the starting quarterback.

As the Browns head into a critical Week 4 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, who also sit at 1-2, the pressure on Watson to deliver is mounting. If Watson continues to falter, the debate over whether he should remain the starter will only intensify. With limited time to turn the season around, Cleveland must weigh the risks and rewards of sticking with Watson, knowing that his future in the starting role may soon be in doubt if his performances don’t improve. If Watson fails again, the Browns may be forced to reevaluate their investment in him and consider alternative options.
