Titans head coach Brian Callahan confirmed that the team plans to sign linebacker Luke Gifford to the active roster, according to team reporter Jim Wyatt. Gifford will fill the roster spot vacated by cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, who is being placed on injured reserve due to a groin injury sustained in the Week 3 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Awuzie’s move to injured reserve means he will be sidelined for at least four weeks as he recovers, opening the door for Gifford’s elevation to the active squad.
Gifford, 29, is a versatile linebacker known for his contributions on special teams. He originally went undrafted out of Nebraska but later signed a three-year, $1.755 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys. During his tenure with the Cowboys, Gifford made the 53-man roster coming out of the preseason but faced setbacks due to injuries. In December 2019, he was placed on injured reserve with a fractured arm, missing the remainder of that season. Although he was eligible to become a restricted free agent, the Cowboys chose not to tender him a contract, leading him to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Gifford found a new home with the Tennessee Titans, signing a two-year deal to bolster their special teams unit. However, his time with the Titans has also been marred by injury, as he spent much of the 2023 season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Despite these setbacks, Gifford has remained a resilient player, showing enough promise in his special teams role to earn another shot on the active roster.
In the 2023 season, Gifford appeared in 11 games for the Titans, making one start. Although his opportunities to shine on defense were limited, he managed to record six total tackles. His primary role has been as a special teams contributor, where his speed, athleticism, and football IQ have proven valuable.
With Awuzie’s absence, the Titans are looking for players to step up, especially on defense and special teams. Gifford’s experience, even if mostly on special teams, provides the Titans with a reliable option. His ability to contribute in various roles could help the Titans maintain depth and flexibility, particularly in the upcoming games, where the team faces tough opponents like the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts.
As Gifford takes on a more prominent role, the Titans hope his durability improves, allowing him to become a more consistent presence for the remainder of the season.
