In the past two seasons, the Houston Texans have evolved into a feel-good story within the NFL. Under Head Coach DeMeco Ryans’ leadership, the previously struggling team has turned around, with star quarterback C.J. Stroud guiding them to significant victories and positioning them as a potential Super Bowl contender in 2024. However, the perseverance of Texans defensive end Dylan Horton offers an even deeper definition of victory.

Horton, a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, faced a major setback early in his career. After a few games in his rookie season, he was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma in December of that year. Fortunately, the cancer entered remission by March 2024, and he completed radiation treatments in May. Despite this intense personal battle, Horton made a remarkable return to action, contributing one tackle on limited duty in his first game back. While he is expected to maintain a smaller role for the remainder of the season, his return to the field less than a year after his diagnosis is an inspiring achievement.

Horton has kept a positive attitude throughout his journey, believing that maintaining a hopeful outlook has made all the difference. His emotional return to Houston’s NRG Stadium, where the Texans secured a 23-20 win over the Bills, was a powerful moment for the team and fans. Head Coach DeMeco Ryans praised Horton for his resilience and positive mindset, noting how he handled the adversity with a smile and great attitude.

Though the victory was sweet, Horton remained focused on the task at hand, expressing joy in being able to play football again with his teammates. His return symbolizes the kind of determination and perseverance it took to overcome his illness.
