George Pickens continues to make jaw-dropping plays look effortless, solidifying his status as one of the most electrifying young wide receivers in the NFL. The play occurred on a third-and-7 from the Steelers’ 24-yard line. Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson launched a deep pass toward Pickens, who had already created separation from Jets cornerback Isaiah Oliver. However, the pass was slightly underthrown, allowing Oliver to close the gap. Pickens, showcasing his remarkable body control, had to adjust mid-air, reaching back for the ball. The throw ricocheted off Oliver’s shoulder pad and facemask, causing the ball to wobble unpredictably. Yet, Pickens maintained his concentration, quickly locating the ball again mid-spin and, while fending off a tackle from Oliver, managed to secure it while falling to the ground. Despite being jostled during the catch, Pickens held on, gaining 37 crucial yards for his team.
Even Pickens’ teammate, running back Najee Harris, was left in awe of the catch, though he wasn’t entirely shocked. Harris explained that Pickens routinely makes incredible grabs during practice. “GP is one of the most talented receivers in the NFL,” Harris said, noting that while he’s seen amazing catches from Pickens before, this one was truly special.
Pickens himself, known for his modesty, downplayed the catch, attributing it to “just concentration.” He explained that during the play, both he and Oliver had momentary possession of the ball before it bounced into the air again. Pickens’ focus and quick reactions allowed him to regain control and complete the catch, an effort that set up a field goal by kicker Chris Boswell to put the Steelers ahead in the game.
This wasn’t an isolated highlight for Pickens. In fact, plays like this are becoming a routine part of his repertoire. Last season, Pickens led the league with an impressive 18.1 yards per reception. His unique ability to make tough catches in traffic and in acrobatic fashion is reminiscent of other standout moments in his young career, such as his leaping touchdown against Jacksonville or his somersaulting catch against Seattle. One of the most memorable catches came during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, where Pickens defied gravity, catching a pass while appearing to levitate along the sideline.
Earlier in the game against the Jets, Pickens also hauled in his first touchdown of the season. His growing confidence and work ethic have him poised for even greater success. “I’d probably say my potential is very high,” Pickens said, but he emphasizes staying focused on his daily work. He’s not caught up in his hype but lets his performance speak for itself.
Quarterback Russell Wilson highlighted Pickens’ impact on the field, describing how the young wide receiver brings a palpable energy to the game. “When he catches that ball, he’s got a light to him,” Wilson said. “The whole stadium feels it and there’s energy to him.”
