The Pittsburgh Steelers released their latest injury report following Friday’s practice in preparation for their Monday Night Football clash with the New York Giants in Week 8. Rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson continues to be a concern, as he missed practice for the second consecutive day due to a lingering hamstring injury. Wilson’s absence is especially notable as he was already listed as inactive in Week 7, having initially been designated as questionable. Steelers reporter Alan Saunders shared that Wilson exacerbated his hamstring issue during Wednesday’s practice session, adding to doubts about his short-term availability.
Wilson, a Michigan standout, has seen limited game action since joining the Steelers, logging just five snaps in the season—all in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders. While Wilson also dealt with an ankle injury earlier in the season, he remained on the inactive list after recovering, as both he and the team have been cautious with his reintegration into play.
Meanwhile, safety DeShon Elliott, who was a late addition to the injury list with a back issue, managed to participate in a limited capacity on Friday after sitting out entirely on Thursday. Running back and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson, returning to practice for the first time since injuring his ankle in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts, was also limited for a second consecutive day. Patterson’s return is a positive development for Pittsburgh, as his versatility adds depth to both the offense and special teams.
Linebacker Nick Herbig, nursing a hamstring injury sustained during the Week 5 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, did not practice and was marked as DNP (Did Not Practice) for the day. Center Zach Frazier, still dealing with an ankle injury since he was pulled out in Week 6 against the Raiders, remains out as well and has yet to resume practicing.
On a positive note, the Steelers expect to see full participation from safety Damontae Kazee and cornerback Donte Jackson. Both were designated as full participants for two consecutive days, increasing their likelihood of playing Monday. Defensive tackle Keeanu Benton, initially limited on Thursday with a calf injury, also practiced fully on Friday. This is encouraging for the Steelers’ defensive front, as Benton has shown promise in his rookie season.
Linebacker Tyler Matakevich, managing a hamstring issue, was limited in practice. Offensive tackle Dylan Cook, recovering from a foot injury, practiced fully. Both Matakevich and Cook are currently on the reserve/injured list, although they have been moved to a 21-day practice window, which gives the Steelers time to assess their readiness to return to the active roster.
This injury report reveals that while some key players are progressing toward a return, others, like Wilson, remain questionable due to recurring setbacks. The Steelers’ coaching staff will need to carefully monitor these injuries leading up to their primetime matchup, as availability on both offense and defense will be crucial against the Giants.
