Former New York Yankees All-Star Gary Sánchez is making a return to the AL East, this time with the Baltimore Orioles. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Sánchez has agreed to a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Orioles.
Sánchez, 32, began his Major League career with the Yankees, earning All-Star honors twice and winning the Silver Slugger Award in 2017. Known for his powerful right-handed bat, Sánchez enjoyed several productive seasons in New York before parting ways with the team after the 2021 season. Since then, he has played for a variety of teams on short-term contracts, with Baltimore now becoming his fifth club in just three seasons.
In 2024, Sánchez played for the Milwaukee Brewers, where he appeared in 89 games. He posted a .220 batting average, belted 11 home runs, and drove in 37 RBIs. While those numbers don’t match his earlier All-Star production, Sánchez remains a capable power-hitting catcher who can add depth to a lineup.
The Orioles’ acquisition of Sánchez is part of a broader effort to bolster their roster following their postseason appearance in 2024. Sánchez’s presence will provide a veteran option behind the plate for a team with rising young talent. His experience in high-pressure environments, including his years in the competitive AL East, could prove valuable as Baltimore looks to build on its recent success.
Earlier on the same day, the Orioles also signed another player from within the division, signaling their intent to strengthen the team in key areas. While Sánchez has faced ups and downs in recent years, the Orioles are betting on his ability to bring veteran leadership and a steady offensive presence to their lineup for the 2025 season.
