The Boston Red Sox have made some solid moves this offseason, acquiring Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox and signing flamethrower Aroldis Chapman, but there’s still much more to be done if they hope to compete with the New York Yankees.

While the Yankees were stung by losing Juan Soto, they’ve quickly responded by signing Max Fried, acquiring All-Star Devin Williams, and reportedly trading for former MVP Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs. Additionally, the Yankees are reportedly eyeing upgrades at first base, and they likely aren’t done yet. In light of these aggressive moves by their rivals, the Red Sox need to act fast to bolster their roster.

One key move the Red Sox should focus on is signing former Baltimore Orioles and Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes, who is still available on the market. Burnes is among the best pitchers in baseball, and Boston has been consistently linked to him. According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, the Red Sox are actively trying to land Burnes, but if they wait too long, they risk seeing him sign elsewhere.

Boston’s rotation could be strong in 2025, but to truly compete with the Yankees, they need to continue adding pieces. While the Yankees’ acquisition of Bellinger is a huge move, adding Burnes would elevate the Red Sox’s chances even further. With the financial resources to make such a move, Boston should waste no time and act decisively before the competition snatches up their top targets.
