The San Francisco Giants have been a focal point of conversation in the baseball world this offseason. After securing star shortstop Willy Adames on a significant contract, they also faced the loss of two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell. While the Giants are in need of another starting pitcher, and have been linked to All-Star Corbin Burnes, they may also explore other options if they are unable to acquire Burnes.
One such potential target is Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star Mitch Keller, as suggested by Grant Brisbee of The Athletic. Keller, once viewed as a future ace, had a standout season in 2022 and followed it up with an improved strikeout rate in 2023, earning an All-Star selection. However, Keller struggled in the second half of the 2023 season, which led the Pirates to extend him with a five-year, $77 million deal, which they hoped would be a bargain. While Keller’s extension might be closer to market value than the Pirates initially anticipated, he remains an intriguing option for teams in need of a solid starter. Brisbee mentions the possibility of the Giants exploring trade options, especially if they miss out on Burnes.
Keller is an interesting prospect at just 28 years old, with a career 4.59 ERA over six seasons. While he hasn’t posted an ERA below 4.00 since 2022, his All-Star nod in 2023 shows his potential. His consistent ability to get strikeouts and his overall pitching ability make him a valuable asset. Despite not having the star power of other pitchers, Keller could be a solid acquisition for the Giants if they are unable to secure Burnes. A trade for Keller could involve younger, ready-to-play arms like Hayden Birdsong, Mason Black, or Landen Roupp, who might develop into key players for the Pirates in the future. If the Giants are unable to land Burnes, Keller could serve as a viable alternative to strengthen their rotation moving forward.
