The Chicago Cubs have had a productive offseason and continue to strengthen their position as a top contender in the National League. The team has been active in both the trade market and free agency, making significant moves to enhance their roster. One of the biggest acquisitions was Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros, a move that likely positions the Cubs as the favorites in the National League Central. However, the Cubs are aiming for more than just a division title, as Tucker is entering the final year of his contract and could be a one-year rental.

To make room financially, the Cubs traded Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees, freeing up salary that can be used to address other needs, particularly in starting pitching and the bullpen. A recent prediction from Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer suggests the Cubs could sign Walker Buehler to a three-year, $45 million deal with two opt-outs, providing both flexibility and an opportunity for Buehler to showcase his abilities.

Buehler, known for his impressive fastball and elite breaking ball, was instrumental in the Dodgers’ World Series win, throwing 10 consecutive scoreless innings. Though his regular-season performance in 2023 was limited due to recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, his playoff showing has reignited interest in his potential. This makes him an intriguing target for the Cubs, despite the risk of his injury history. The proposed deal would likely be beneficial for both parties, as it allows the Cubs to evaluate Buehler’s performance in a high-stakes setting, with the option for him to opt out if he returns to his former ace form.

While there is some inherent risk in committing to a three-year deal, the $45 million contract is relatively modest for a pitcher with Buehler’s pedigree, making the potential reward worth the gamble. The Cubs’ strategy of signing Buehler could pay off if he regains his peak form, offering them a valuable addition to their rotation while also maintaining flexibility for the future.
