Santander, 30, had a career year in 2024, hitting 44 home runs (third-most in MLB), driving in 102 RBIs, posting an .814 OPS and a 134 OPS+, and accumulating 2.9 bWAR. His performance has made him a highly sought-after free agent, with projections estimating his next contract could be worth $105 million over five years. However, the market for the switch-hitting outfielder doesn’t seem as strong as anticipated, which could potentially work to the Astros’ advantage. If Houston is patient, they might be able to sign Santander at a more affordable price.
While the financial aspect remains a significant hurdle for the Astros, adding a power bat like Santander’s could help balance their outfield and strengthen their offense.
