As the new year approaches, free-agent reliever Tanner Scott remains unsigned, but he continues to attract significant interest from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are looking to bolster their bullpen after the retirement of veteran Daniel Hudson. Scott, who last played for the San Diego Padres, has emerged as a key target for the Dodgers, especially after their failed attempt to acquire Milwaukee’s Devin Williams, which ended when the New York Yankees secured him. Despite having a solid bullpen, the Dodgers are actively seeking another arm, possibly to take on the closer role.
According to Major League Baseball insider Rowan Kavner of Fox Sports, it’s predicted that Scott will soon sign with the Dodgers, a move that would address the team’s need for bullpen depth. Dodgers president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, has acknowledged this need, explaining that adding another reliever would increase their chances of avoiding a trade deadline acquisition. Friedman further emphasized the importance of strengthening the bullpen now, rather than waiting until July, stating, “My goal is to do everything we can right now to not buy in July.”
This offseason, the Dodgers have already made several significant moves, including signing former Padres and San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell, re-signing reliever Blake Treinen, and adding outfielder Michael Conforto. Despite these additions, the team is still looking to shore up its bullpen, with Scott seen as an ideal addition.
Scott had a breakout year in 2023, earning his first All-Star selection and posting a strong 2.73 ERA across 28 appearances for the Padres. His impressive season included a 1.75 ERA, 22 saves, and 84 strikeouts in 62.2 innings, showcasing his ability to perform well in high-leverage situations against both left- and right-handed hitters. His performance in 2023 has made him one of the most sought-after relievers this offseason, and with the Dodgers needing to reinforce their bullpen, Scott could be a valuable addition to their roster.
