The Atlanta Braves have had a relatively quiet offseason, with their biggest need being an upgrade at shortstop, which they could address by signing Ha-Seong Kim from the San Diego Padres. According to Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball, the Braves are predicted to offer Kim a five-year, $60 million deal. While the Braves already have Orlando Arcia, a solid defensive shortstop, he doesn’t provide the same offensive production as Kim.
Arcia’s performance took a step back in 2024, as his OPS dropped significantly from .741 to .625, and he only managed 46 RBIs. In contrast, Kim, despite a down year in 2024 that ended early due to a labrum injury requiring surgery, offers more versatility and could be a key piece if he returns to his 2023 form. That year, Kim won a utility Gold Glove and posted a slash line of .260/.351/.398 with 17 home runs. While Kim’s batting numbers in 2024 were less impressive, with a .233 average and 11 home runs, his defensive flexibility could be invaluable for the Braves, especially in case of injuries. Though his expected price might seem high, if Kim can return to his 2023 level of play, he could provide the Braves with a viable solution at shortstop.
