The Atlanta Braves have yet to make any major moves this offseason, but they are in need of an upgrade at shortstop, potentially making a trade for one of the top players in the league. Toronto Blue Jays star Bo Bichette, who will become a free agent next offseason, could be the answer. FanSided’s Zach Pressnell suggested a trade in which the Braves acquire Bichette in exchange for shortstop Nach Alvarez Jr., right-handed pitcher Bryce Elder, and left-handed pitcher Dylan Dodd.
Although Bichette had a down year in 2024, even his performance at that level could be a solid addition for the Braves. At his peak, he is a two-time All-Star and has led the American League in hits twice. Pressnell argues that Bichette could be an excellent addition, with the potential to become an All-MLB shortstop again. At worst, he would be comparable to Orlando Arcia, the Braves’ current shortstop, who had a drop in production after an impressive 2023 season. Arcia’s OPS fell from .741 to .625 in 2024, despite hitting 17 home runs, though he managed only 46 RBIs.
Bichette signed a three-year, $33 million contract in 2023, but with his free agency approaching and the Blue Jays unlikely to convince him to stay, they might be motivated to trade him before he hits the open market. If the Braves manage to acquire Bichette, he would strengthen their infield alongside Austin Riley, Matt Olson, and Ozzie Albies, forming a formidable group that could improve their overall performance and prospects for the 2025 season.
