The Atlanta Braves are reportedly targeting San Diego Padres free-agent left-handed reliever Tanner Scott as a potential addition to their bullpen. According to David O’Brien of The Athletic, Scott is seen as a strong candidate to fill a significant void in the Braves’ relief pitching corps. O’Brien had previously discussed Scott as an ideal target and mentioned contract predictions for the lefty, including a four-year, $64 million deal suggested by The Athletic’s Tim Britton, with MLB Trade Rumors projecting $56 million for the same term. O’Brien expressed that with how the market has developed, Britton’s estimate could be closer to what Scott eventually signs for, though it might still be a bit low.

O’Brien confirmed the Braves’ interest when responding to a question on social media about whether he was highlighting Scott’s contract projections because of the team’s pursuit of him. Scott, coming off one of the strongest seasons of his career, is poised to be an impactful addition. Over 72 appearances split between the Miami Marlins and Padres, the 30-year-old lefty posted a 1.75 ERA, 22 saves, a 1.12 WHIP, and 84 strikeouts across 72 innings pitched. His performance, especially in late-game situations, would provide the Braves with a proven left-handed option for the bullpen, bolstering their late-inning relief. With 67 of his 72 appearances in the late innings, Scott has experience handling high-pressure situations, making him a valuable asset for a team with World Series aspirations.

If Scott’s contract is closer to Britton’s $64 million projection, his annual salary would likely be around $16 million, which could be a significant financial commitment, especially in consideration of the Braves’ luxury tax status. While the team has indicated it is willing to exceed the luxury tax again, they also need to allocate resources toward other needs, particularly a starting pitcher and a corner outfielder. As of now, the pursuit of a shortstop doesn’t appear to be a top priority for the Braves this offseason. Despite these factors, adding Scott would still be a solid upgrade for the bullpen, and if the Braves are unable to address other positions, bolstering the relief staff would still be a prudent move.
