The Boston Red Sox are in need of adding right-handed power to their lineup this offseason, and while Alex Bregman, the standout free agent and All-Star, is currently the most discussed option, there is a chance that the Red Sox could miss out on signing him, leaving them with a potential pivot to another major target: Pete Alonso.
The New York Mets’ former star first baseman is available, and Spotrac predicts that Alonso could sign a six-year, $174 million deal. As the offseason progresses, Alonso’s price might decrease, making him an even more appealing option for Boston. However, the Red Sox already have a talented first baseman in Triston Casas, so adding Alonso would likely require some roster adjustments. To accommodate Alonso, the Red Sox could trade either Casas or Masataka Yoshida, with the preferable option being moving Yoshida. This move would open up the designated hitter role, allowing Alonso, Casas, and Rafael Devers to coexist in the lineup. If Boston were to secure Alonso, it could give the team a significant boost, making them a true contender in the American League for the 2025 season, especially if they miss out on Bregman.
