Could the Boston Red Sox finally circle back to a long-speculated move this offseason?

In September, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic raised the possibility that the Red Sox might trade first baseman Triston Casas, move Rafael Devers to first base, and sign Alex Bregman. Fast forward a few months, and Bregman remains one of the biggest names available in free agency, putting the Red Sox in a position to revisit that very scenario.

Since then, rumors linking Bregman to the Red Sox have persisted, though there’s been no indication of a concrete offer or a deal being imminent. Bregman, however, has made it clear he’s open to playing second base, which could enable the Red Sox to retain both Casas at first and Devers at third.

In recent weeks, speculation has pointed to the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays as the most likely landing spots for Bregman. Yet, Rosenthal has another perspective on the situation. On a recent episode of Fair Territory, he predicted that Bregman would ultimately sign with the Red Sox, suggesting that the move made logical sense despite it being more of an educated guess than inside information.

Rosenthal highlighted that Bregman could fill the Red Sox’s need for a right-handed bat, something they’ve lacked since last season. The team could either play him at second base or move Devers to first and slot Bregman at third.

Earlier this winter, Tim Britton of The Athletic estimated that Bregman could land a seven-year, $189 million deal. Though no team has made an offer close to that amount yet, the situation could heat up quickly with a couple of teams entering the bidding. The Red Sox might feel compelled to participate in a potential bidding war, especially after a previous trade for Garrett Crochet was seemingly motivated by the Yankees’ signing of Max Fried.

It remains to be seen whether the Red Sox will pull the trigger on a deal for Bregman, but it’s clear that the rumor mill surrounding him and Boston could soon culminate in a major acquisition.
