The Chicago Cubs are making waves this offseason with a string of intriguing moves, including what is arguably the most significant trade of the winter so far: acquiring superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. In a related move, the Cubs also traded star Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees. With Tucker joining the team, the Cubs now have the potential to become the top team in the National League Central, and they could solidify their position by making another impactful addition.

If the Cubs are looking to make another major move, the most logical target would be a starting pitcher. The most high-profile pitcher on the market right now is Jack Flaherty, who has played for multiple teams over the course of his career, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Flaherty is projected to secure a three-year, $63 million deal this offseason, according to Spotrac. While it is still uncertain where Flaherty will end up, MLB insider Mark Feinsand reported that the Cubs are one of the teams “in the mix” for his services. Other teams, including the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers, are also reportedly in pursuit of the 29-year-old pitcher.

Flaherty had a strong showing in 2024, making 28 starts across two teams (the Tigers and Dodgers) and posting an impressive 3.17 ERA. He also earned the distinction of starting Game 1 of the World Series for the Dodgers, showcasing his ability to perform on the big stage. Given his proven track record and experience, Flaherty could be the missing piece for the Cubs’ rotation. His addition would provide them with a reliable arm capable of anchoring their pitching staff, further strengthening their push for a division title in the competitive NL Central.

The Cubs have already made a statement this offseason with the acquisition of Tucker, but adding Flaherty to the mix could help propel them into serious contention for a postseason berth. As they continue to explore their options, the Cubs’ next steps could determine whether they emerge as a dominant force in the National League.
