While they may claim confidence in their current setup, which includes Anthony Volpe, Paul Goldschmidt, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. as key starters, the final spot remains uncertain. Bryan Hoch, the Yankees’ beat reporter for MLB.com, speculated that a trade for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado could still be in play. In a recent SNY television appearance, Hoch noted that although trade talks had stalled, the Yankees might circle back to Arenado, especially considering the Cardinals may be eager to move him before Opening Day. If the Yankees decide to pursue Arenado, the plan might involve placing DJ LeMahieu in a different role within the infield.
Arenado, 33, had a down year offensively in 2024, posting a .719 OPS and a 101 OPS+, which marked his worst offensive performance since 2013. However, given his impressive history—10 Gold Glove awards and eight All-Star selections—there’s reason to believe that Arenado could bounce back with a change of scenery. This track record suggests that a strong season is still possible for the veteran third baseman.
The primary obstacle in acquiring Arenado is his contract. He still has three years remaining on the $260 million extension he signed with the Colorado Rockies. If the Yankees were to take on the full financial commitment without the Cardinals contributing any money, they would be responsible for $64 million over the remaining years. To make this deal more manageable, the Yankees might explore options to offset some of the financial burden, either by offering the Cardinals prospects or structuring the trade in a way that reduces the salary impact.
The Cardinals have no immediate rush to make a trade, so the price could remain relatively stable as the offseason progresses. Nonetheless, the Yankees may still be in a position to acquire Arenado, depending on how much they’re willing to sacrifice in terms of prospects and salary considerations. With their infield still in need of a final piece, a trade for Arenado could prove to be a significant move for New York’s roster as they gear up for the 2025 season.
