On Thursday, the Montréal Canadiens claimed forward Colin White off of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ waiver list.
Since being called up by the Penguins in January, White has appeared in 11 games, but he was deemed useless. During his tenure with the Penguins, White’s average ice time was 9:57.
Following his professional tryout contract attendance at Pittsburgh’s training camp, White was signed by the Penguins to a one-year contract in October.
White scored five goals and five assists for ten points in 21 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Penguins.
The 26-year-old played in 68 games with the Florida Panthers last season, tallying 15 points with eight goals and seven assists. In 21 postseason games, he contributed two assists as the Panthers advanced to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final.
White was first chosen by the Ottawa Senators in the opening round of the 2015 NHL Draft. After his draft year, White played two seasons in the NCAA with Boston College before making his professional debut in 2017 with the Senators. After agreeing to a six-year, $4.75 million AAV contract with the Senators in August 2019 as a restricted free agency, White found it difficult to return to his prior level of play.
Over the course of the next three seasons, he scored 20 goals and 51 points in 130 games before Ottawa bought him out in 2022.
Over the course of eight NHL seasons and 303 games, White has played for the Penguins, Senators, and Panthers. He has 44 goals and 69 assists for 113 points. In 22 playoff games in his career, he has contributed two assists.
The Canadiens have a 22-26-8 record and 52 points in 56 games, which puts them in seventh place in the Atlantic Division right now.
Montreal’s next opponents are the New Jersey Devils on Saturday and the Penguins tonight. It’s unknown if White will be included in the starting lineup on Saturday or tonight.
