For the first five games of spring training, the Cincinnati Reds have announced their starting pitchers.
As per MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon, the following players will receive the ball to begin Cactus League play:
For their Cactus League games, the Reds’ likely starting pitchers are…
Spiers Saturday at CLE
Sun vs. LAA: Greene
Abbott vs. SEA in Mon (ss)
Martinez at MIL on Monday (ss)
Tuesday at CHC: Montas
The 26-year-old Carson Spiers is one of the Reds’ 40-man roster players and has played in four major league games. In 2023, he had a 6.92 ERA in his four outings and went 0-1. He made one save as well.
Regarding Greene, he is a fundamental member of the Reds organization. With a 4.62 ERA and a 9–20 overall record, the 24-year-old has a triple-digit fastball and has the potential to advance significantly in 2024.
Abbott, who is currently 24 years old, made his major league debut last year. With 21 starts, he is 8–6 with a 3.87 ERA. He seems to be a constant in the schedule.
After playing with the San Diego Padres the previous season, veteran Nick Martinez joined with the Reds this summer. Although he might end up in the bullpen, he is a contender for the rotation.
After making just one appearance for the New York Yankees in the previous season, Montas finally inked a one-year contract with the Reds this offseason. He’s a candidate for a comeback and will guarantee a slot in the rotation.
With a final record of 82–80, Cincinnati is a popular choice to qualify for the postseason this year.
