In an attempt to imply that Geno Smith will be their quarterback at least through 2024, the Seattle Seahawks have taken another step.
Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Seahawks and Smith reached an agreement on a modified contract on Thursday. By making this change, Smith’s $9.6 million roster bonus becomes a signing bonus, freeing up roughly $4.8 million in salary cap space.
The Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta pointed out that Smith was supposed to get this money on March 18. By making this change, the Seahawks are able to spread that cap hit over two seasons and he now gets it.
There was a slight conjecture that the Seahawks might try to improve at quarterback in the upcoming summer. But they had already taken a significant step that indicated Smith would remain a major part of their future plans. That seems to be confirmed by this.
Smith, who finished the 2017 season with 3,624 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, has been an incredible tale for the Seahawks. Despite his ailments in the latter part of the season, the Seahawks seem happy to use the 33-year-old again.
