With plenty of cap room and a talented quarterback prospect to develop around, the Indianapolis Colts are in a good spot this offseason.
But even with these benefits, difficult choices still need to be made, especially when it comes to roster layoffs. Mo Alie-Cox, a longtime Colts player, might be one of these casualties.
After joining Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent from Virginia Commonwealth in 2018, Alie-Cox has proven to be a reliable player. However, after two seasons of receiving yardage that were below average, questions have been raised over his future with the organization.
Alie-Cox was recently identified by Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team as a possible cap casualty for the Colts.
The fewest catches for 161 yards that Mo Alie-Cox recorded in his career came in 2019. The Indianapolis Colts, lead by coach Shane Steichen, seem to have decided on Kylen Granson as his tight end. Jelani Woods should return to the squad in good shape for the upcoming campaign.
Meirov made the point that the Colts have other tight end alternatives, such Kylen Granson and Jelani Woods, so keeping Alie-Cox around isn’t as important. The team would save $5.9 million and avoid incurring any dead money if the veteran was released, providing major cap relief.
Alie-Cox has already been included in lists of probable cap casualties. He was also deemed a strong contender by Bleacher Report because of his hefty 2024 cap cost for Indianapolis.
Despite the fact that Alie-Cox has spent a lot of time with the squad, it seems wise to take advantage of the financial flexibility that removing him would provide.
