The Denver Broncos are anticipated to part ways with Russell Wilson in the near future as they look to pursue a younger quarterback. Despite a former first-round pick being available for trade, they have shown no interest.

According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the New York Jets have granted Zach Wilson, the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, permission to explore potential trades. However, the Broncos have not expressed interest in acquiring him.

While Wilson, at 24, has displayed glimpses of potential during his career, he still requires further development and may not be prepared to lead a team at this stage. His performance statistics include a 57 percent completion rate, 23 touchdowns, 25 interceptions, and a below-average 73.2 passer rating over three seasons.

Rosenblatt also mentioned that the Broncos may be considering trading for Justin Fields of the Chicago Bears or Sam Howell of the Washington Commanders, both of whom are viewed as superior alternatives.

Howell could be a suitable addition to head coach Sean Payton’s offensive scheme. In 2023, the former fifth-round pick surpassed MVP Lamar Jackson in passing yards, accumulating 3,946 yards in 17 games compared to Jackson’s 3,678 yards in 16 games. According to Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano, the asking price for the 23-year-old quarterback is likely a “third-round pick, maybe more.” Given this, Denver may want to consider taking a chance on him.

Despite the potential acquisition of Howell, the Broncos, who hold the 12th overall pick in the draft, should still prioritize selecting a quarterback. Recent reports suggest they met with Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy on Tuesday night and interviewed Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. on Wednesday.

Nevertheless, it remains imperative for the team to identify a standout player to revitalize the struggling franchise. After enduring their seventh consecutive losing season in 2023, the Broncos ranked 19th in the league in points scored per game, underscoring the urgency of their search for talent.
