The Indianapolis Colts have decided to re-sign running back Trey Sermon. This news was confirmed by Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star on social media. However, the financial terms of the contract were not revealed. Interestingly, this decision comes just a day after the Colts chose not to tender him as a restricted free agent.
Sermon joined the Indianapolis Colts towards the end of the 2023 season after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles during training camp. He was active for 14 consecutive games with the Colts from Weeks 3 to 17.
During his time with the Colts last season, Sermon recorded 160 rushing yards on 35 carries and caught 3 passes for 13 yards. He also played a career-high 108 offensive snaps and contributed on special teams for 18 snaps.
Originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Sermon appeared in only nine games during his rookie season with the 49ers before being waived ahead of his second season.
After being claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles, Sermon spent the entire 2022 season with them but only appeared in two games. Throughout his NFL career spanning 25 games, he has amassed 346 rushing yards on 78 carries, averaging 4.4 yards per rush, and contributed 6 catches for 39 yards. His sole NFL touchdown occurred during his rookie season with the San Francisco 49ers.
With Sermon’s re-signing, the Colts now have five running backs under contract for the 2024 season. Jonathan Taylor is expected to be the primary starter, leaving Sermon to compete with Evan Hull, Tyler Goodson, and Zavier Scott for playing time. However, the possibility of adding another running back to the roster remains open.
According to a report by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts emerged as one of three teams that former Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon was considering early in free agency. Additionally, Bet Wisconsin listed the Colts as one of the top contenders to acquire Dillon’s services.
Should Dillon join the Colts, he would likely step into the role of the team’s primary backup running back for the upcoming 2024 season.
