LSU’s new defensive coordinator, Blake Baker, faces a significant challenge in rebuilding the team’s defense following a dismal season. As part of their efforts to return to success, LSU football recruiting is actively pursuing talented prospects like edge rusher Damien Shanklin for the class of 2025, positioning themselves among the top contenders for his commitment.
LSU’s recruiting efforts for the class of 2025 are making a significant impact, currently boasting a top-notch class with 10 commitments, all rated as four-star recruits or higher. However, there is a notable gap in defensive commitments, with only linebackers Keylan Moses and Charles Ross, along with cornerback Jaboree Antoine, currently pledged to the team.
Despite this gap, the coaching staff, led by Blake Baker, is actively addressing defensive needs. Most notably, LSU has emerged as one of 12 contenders for highly sought-after edge rusher Damien Shanklin, indicating their commitment to strengthening their defensive roster.
Joining LSU in the mix for the four-star prospect are Cincinnati, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, USC, and Washington, rounding out his top 12 choices.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 230 pounds, Shanklin hails from Indianapolis, IN, and is already showing promise as one of the nation’s top talents. He is currently ranked No. 47 nationally and holds the top spot within Indiana, according to 247Sports.
Shanklin’s skill set includes long arms, impressive strength, and speed, making him a formidable edge rusher with a variety of techniques to pressure quarterbacks. Moreover, as a standout discus thrower, he brings athleticism and versatility to whichever college program he chooses.
While Notre Dame appears to be leading the pack for Shanklin, he has recently visited Ohio State, Tennessee, and Texas, indicating his options remain open. With his top 12 announcement, a final decision from Shanklin is not imminent, giving LSU the opportunity to strengthen their recruitment efforts following their February offer.
