An investigation has been launched into the death of former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Konstantin Koltsov, who passed away in Miami at the age of 42. The Miami-Dade Police Department has stated that Koltsov’s death is being classified as a suicide.
According to a statement from the police department, they responded to a situation involving a male who jumped from a balcony at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort. Authorities have not indicated any suspicion of foul play. The incident occurred around 12:39 p.m. on Monday.
The Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Bureau has taken charge of the investigation.
Initial reports from Telegraf, a Belarusian media outlet, suggested that Koltsov’s death was related to a “detached blood clot.”
Konstantin Koltsov, who was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the 1999 draft, played three seasons with the team from 2002 to 2006, totaling 144 games and 38 points during that period. The Penguins expressed their condolences to Koltsov’s family and friends in a statement following his passing.
During his final season with the Penguins, Koltsov had the opportunity to play alongside notable players such as Sidney Crosby and Mario Lemieux.
Koltsov was in Miami with his girlfriend Aryna Sabalenka, who holds the rank of No. 2 in women’s tennis globally. They were in Miami to participate in the 2024 Miami Open, with Sabalenka scheduled to begin her matches on Friday.
