After experiencing multiple benchings during the 2023 season in favor of Bailey Zappe, it became clear that Mac Jones’ tenure with the New England Patriots was drawing to a close. Following three underwhelming seasons marked by 46 touchdowns and 36 interceptions, Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2024 sixth-round pick on the day after free agency commenced. This move, according to Jones, was mutually agreed upon as the best course of action for both parties.
“We mutually agreed that parting ways was the optimal choice,” Jones stated in comments to the Boston Herald. “For me, it meant moving on and returning home, which I am incredibly excited about. And for them, it’s about progressing and moving forward. So, that’s what we decided, and I believe it’s the right decision.”
After an impressive rookie campaign where he threw for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions, earning a Pro Bowl nod, Jones struggled in the subsequent two seasons. His performance declined notably under offensive play-caller Matt Patricia in 2022 and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien in the following season, leading to inconsistency.
Jones’s record as the Patriots’ starter stands at 18-24, with 8,918 passing yards, a completion rate of 66.1%, and a passer rating of 85.8. In Jacksonville, he is expected to vie with C.J. Beathard and Nathan Rourke for the backup role behind Trevor Lawrence.
In contrast, the Patriots recently signed Jacoby Brissett to a one-year contract and are anticipated to select Jones’ successor with the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming draft.
