Dalvin Cook, who previously garnered four Pro Bowl selections and achieved four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons, experienced a decline in visibility during the 2023 season.

Despite remaining unsigned for nearly a month into free agency, Cook maintains unwavering confidence in his ability to make game-changing plays.

NFL Injury Spotlight Week 3: Dalvin Cook, Minnesota Vikings

“I still possess all the necessary skills,” Cook stated during a workout with KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson on Friday. “Last year, I didn’t receive many opportunities to showcase my abilities. My legs are fresh, and my track record speaks for itself. I am still the same Dalvin Cook, still capable of making an impact. Personally, I prefer to let my performance do the talking rather than boast about it. I’m just focused on putting on my helmet, stepping onto the field, and giving my best effort.”

Cook has accumulated seven years of experience as an NFL running back, boasting an impressive resume despite facing recurring injuries. Selected in the second round of the 2017 draft, Cook has amassed 6,207 rushing yards and 47 touchdowns, along with 1,872 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns on 236 receptions.

In 2023, only 292 of Cook’s total yards came through, as he joined the Jets after being released by Minnesota, but struggled to find his rhythm with the team.

His signing with the Jets was initially seen as a move signaling their readiness for a Super Bowl run. However, their aspirations were dashed early in the season when quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury just four snaps into the campaign. With backup Zach Wilson leading the offense, and Breece Hall returning from injury, Cook found himself playing a supporting role, averaging only 4.4 carries per game across 15 appearances.

Following Week 17, Cook and the Jets mutually agreed to part ways. He then joined the Ravens, but his postseason contribution was limited to one game, where he carried the ball eight times for 23 yards.

While Cook had experienced a decline in efficiency in his final season with the Vikings in 2022, his performance in 2023 took a surprising and significant downturn.

Despite the current market finding new homes for veteran running backs like Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Aaron Jones, Austin Ekeler, and Tony Pollard, Cook remains patient in his search for his next team.

Reflecting on last year’s experience, Cook acknowledges it as a learning curve and emphasizes the importance of patience. He believes the right opportunity will come, and when it does, he’ll be ready to make the most of it.

Wherever he ends up, Cook is prepared to compete for his spot in the running back room, possibly facing a lighter workload similar to 2023. Nevertheless, he remains confident in his abilities and is determined to prove himself once again.

“I’m going to earn my spot wherever I go,” Cook asserted, noting his readiness to seize any opportunity that arises.
