The Houston Astros are reportedly adjusting their pitching rotation following the placement of pitcher Framber Valdez on the 15-day injured list.
According to The Athletic, the Astros are planning to promote their top pitching prospect, right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, for his Major League debut in Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. While Houston has yet to make an official announcement regarding Wednesday’s starter, this move would likely involve pushing back scheduled starter Hunter Brown to Thursday’s finale.
Arrighetti, ranked as the Astros’ No. 3 prospect by MLB.com and the top pitcher in their farm system, began the season with Triple-A but participated in Major League spring training with the Astros. Despite his limited spring training appearances, he impressed with his potential.
Arrighetti has already made two starts with Triple-A Sugar Land, posting a 2.16 ERA in 8 1/3 innings. Overall, he holds a minor league career record of 19-15 with a 4.37 ERA.
This promotion comes at a time when the Astros’ pitching rotation is facing uncertainty, with Valdez sidelined due to left elbow inflammation and other pitchers dealing with injuries or recovery processes. Despite possibly wanting to give Arrighetti more time in the minors, the Astros are now preparing for his Major League debut.
