Following a disrupted 2023 season due to injury, Te Maire Martin, the standoff for the One New Zealand Warriors in the NRL, has made a comeback to the team and attributes his balanced life off the field for his resurgence.
At the start of the 2024 season, Martin played in the club’s New South Wales Cup team but seized another opportunity in the number six jersey after Luke Metcalf suffered a broken leg against the Newcastle Knights.
Reflecting on his return to first grade, Martin, a former Kiwi international, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “It’s always good getting to play first grade.” He highlighted his stint off the field last year, starting with a few games in the NSW Cup, and emphasized the significance of playing in the top grade and winning games.
The past 12 months have been a mixture of highs and lows for Martin. Initially starting as the first-choice halves partner for Shaun Johnson in 2023, he faced setbacks due to his own broken leg (fibula) before returning for the club’s finals campaign.
Despite the emotional rollercoaster, Martin found solace in nature, particularly in fishing and hunting, which helped maintain his happiness and balance. He stressed the importance of having interests outside of football to avoid getting too caught up in the sport.
Head coach Andrew Webster commended Martin’s performance at the beginning of the season, noting his impressive attitude, fitness, and work ethic. Webster expressed confidence in Martin’s potential, emphasizing the need for consistent game time to unlock his abilities.
Martin’s 78th career appearance on Saturday marked only his 10th since joining the club. His milestone was celebrated with an outstanding individual try, two line breaks, a try assist for Johnson’s second try, and 22 tackles.
