The Houston Astros have confirmed the tragic passing of former prospect Ronny Garcia. MLB reporter Hector Gomez broke the news late Friday night, revealing that Garcia, along with his father, was involved in a fatal traffic accident in Samana, Dominican Republic. The Astros expressed deep sorrow upon learning of Garcia’s untimely death.
Garcia, who initially joined the Astros as an international free agent in 2016 at the age of 16, spent several seasons in the organization. Primarily a right-handed reliever, he showcased promising talent during his time in the minor leagues, though he didn’t advance beyond the High-A level. Despite this, Garcia maintained a solid career ERA of 3.42 and averaged 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings across 122 appearances.
In February, Garcia signed with the York Revolution in the Atlantic League, but the 2024 season has yet to commence. His last pitching outing occurred with the High-A Asheville Tourists in September 2023.
