The Texas Rangers have taken a chance on a former two-time All-Star pitcher by signing Johnny Cueto to a minor-league contract. Cueto, who played for the San Francisco Giants from 2016 to 2021, was attracted to the Rangers due to their status as defending World Series champions and his relationship with manager Bruce Bochy, who managed the Giants during Cueto’s first four seasons there.
Cueto had impressive seasons with the Giants, including winning 19 games in 2012, 20 games in 2014, and 18 games in 2016. His last notable season was in 2022 with the White Sox, where he posted an 8-10 record with a 3.35 ERA. However, his performance dipped in 2023 with the Marlins, where he recorded a 1-4 record with a 6.02 ERA over 13 games.
Despite Cueto’s recent struggles, the Rangers, who currently lead the AL West with a 12-11 record, are optimistic about his potential contribution to the team.
