It’s widely acknowledged that Michigan football is in need of cornerback reinforcements, especially after D.J. Waller’s departure to Kentucky last week via the transfer portal.
Michigan football is actively exploring options in the transfer portal. They’re bringing in defensive tackle CJ West for a visit and have extended an offer to former Youngstown State wide receiver C.J. Charleston. Additionally, they’re strongly positioned to reacquire Amorion Walker to bolster their wide receiver corps.
Despite positive performances from Jyaire Hill and Ja’Den McBurrows during spring practices, Waller’s exit has highlighted the need for additional depth at cornerback. With just one day left in the transfer portal window, the urgency to secure reinforcements is evident.
Even prior to Waller’s departure, Michigan likely required another cornerback, and now they may need two. One potential option is Omarion Cooper, a former player for Colorado and Florida State.
Cooper, who was previously recruited by Michigan, has extensive experience with 30 career games, three interceptions, nine pass breakups, and 67 tackles. At 6 feet tall and 197 pounds, he would add depth and experience to Michigan’s secondary, particularly with the absence of Rod Moore, who was expected to contribute in the nickel position before his injury during spring practices.
It appears that Zeke Berry is prepared to assume the nickel role, and Ja’Den McBurrows seems capable as well. However, Michigan would still face challenges if they were to experience one or two injuries in the secondary. While Omarion Cooper may not be a feasible option, the Wolverines must prioritize adding depth to their secondary before the start of fall camp.
