Porter Moser and his coaching staff at Oklahoma have been actively working this spring to address the depletion of their roster, which has seen seven players depart since the end of the last college basketball season. With the loss of several players, particularly in the guard position, the Sooners are in dire need of bolstering their experience and depth.
To address this, the Sooners have secured commitments from two recruits as part of the 2024 class and have recently added several players from the transfer portal.
One of their latest additions is guard Jadon Jones, who joins from Long Beach State. Shortly after, sharpshooting guard Brycen Goodine from Fairfield University committed to Oklahoma for the 2024-25 season. Additionally, former Depaul guard Kobe Elvis has also joined the Sooners via the transfer portal.
Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, Jones brings valuable experience to the team, having played 112 games over four years. He boasts career averages of 10.2 points and 28 minutes per game, with 90 starts for Long Beach State. Last season, Jones, named the Big West Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 12.1 points, shooting 41.9 percent from the field and 37 percent from beyond the arc. He also maintains an impressive free-throw shooting percentage of 81 percent in the 2023-24 season.
Goodine showcased his prowess as a three-point specialist, boasting an impressive 47 percent shooting accuracy from beyond the arc during the 2023-24 season. With an average of 13.9 points per game, he ranked as the eighth highest scorer in the Mid American Athletic Conference. However, his skills extend beyond spot-up shooting, as he possesses the ability to create scoring opportunities off the dribble, whether by driving to the rim or efficiently shooting off the dribble.
One concern for the Sooners regarding Jones, Goodine, and Elvis is that all three transfers have just one season of eligibility remaining.
In addition to these transfers, the Sooners have secured commitments from two freshman recruits for the 2024-25 season. Kuol Atak, a 6-foot, 9-inch power forward from Ft. Worth, Texas, is a four-star prospect ranked as the No. 26 power forward in the 2024 class and the No. 109 player overall. Dayton Forsythe, a 6-foot, 2-inch combo guard from McCloud, Oklahoma, is rated as a three-star prospect and the No. 29 combo guard in his class.
Interestingly, this marks the third consecutive season that Oklahoma has faced the challenge of practically rebuilding its entire men’s roster, coinciding with Moser’s tenure as head coach in Norman.
Despite these additions, Oklahoma remains down two players from the seven lost from the previous season. While three players had exhausted their eligibility (Le’Tre Darthard, Rivaldo Soares, and Maks Klanjscek), four others entered the transfer portal (Javian McCollum, John Hugely IV, Otega Oweh, and Milos Uzan).
