We may have caught glimpses of it towards the end of the 2023 NRL season, but Sam Walker used ANZAC Day to firmly establish himself as the linchpin for reshaping the Sydney Roosters into a different team from the past few seasons.
In what could easily be described as his most outstanding performance to date, Walker played a pivotal role in the Roosters’ dominant victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons.
While the final scoreline of 60-18 might suggest a complete blowout, it barely scratches the surface of Walker’s brilliance. Despite facing the Dragons, who have shown promise under new coach Shane Flanagan, and despite their fatigue from playing their third game in 11 days, Walker tore through their defense with ease.
By the end of the game, Walker, rightfully named man of the match, had amassed an impressive 24 points, including ten goals and a try. Beyond the stats, his influence was felt throughout the match, orchestrating the Roosters’ attack and showcasing exceptional kicking skills.
Walker’s ability to control the game and make those around him better, particularly in the spine, has been a game-changer for the Roosters. His return from a long-term injury in the 2023 season significantly boosted the team’s performance, and his partnership with Brandon Smith has shown promise.
With Walker leading the charge, the Roosters aim to elevate their game and achieve greater consistency in the 2024 season. It’s clear that if they want to evolve from their 2023 form, Walker will be at the forefront, guiding the team to new heights while allowing his more experienced teammates to shine alongside him.
