The Sydney Swans are on the verge of announcing a contract extension for young forward Logan McDonald, as reported by 7NEWS Perth’s Ryan Daniels. The AFL premiership favorites have had an impressive 11-1 start to the season, bolstered by key re-signings.
Will Hayward signed a five-year deal last week, joining Errol Gulden and James Rowbottom in making long-term commitments this season. Despite inevitable interest from Fremantle and West Coast, McDonald, originally from Western Australia, has expressed a desire to stay in Sydney. The Swans could announce his new deal in a matter of days.
“There’s been a lot of talk about Logan McDonald in the past couple of years,” Daniels said on Triple M. “Will he return to Fremantle, potentially go to West Coast, or stay in Sydney? I believe the announcement that he’ll stay at Sydney is imminent. I reckon we might see it even this week.”
McDonald played seven games in his debut season in 2021 and has significantly improved since, playing 17 games the following year before being a tough omission for the grand final. He kicked 32 goals in 20 games last year and is performing even better this season with 19 goals from 12 games. Even when goalless, he has contributed with direct assists.
The Swans are one win away from matching last year’s total of 12, but coach John Longmire insists they still have work to do to prove their premiership credentials. Despite a slow start against Geelong, Sydney turned a 29-point deficit into a 30-point victory, demonstrating their resilience.
“You can’t flirt when you’re playing well,” Longmire said. “We’ve still got work to do on our starts. We got exposed in the first quarter against a good team when we took the pressure off a little bit. We don’t want to be a team that relies solely on talent. When we’re working hard and putting pressure on, our talent is able to shine. It doesn’t work the other way around.”
