The New York Mets might go all-in for 2025 and are gearing up to sign one of the many talented free agents this offseason. However, the most coveted free agent might remain with their crosstown rivals.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets are among the many teams interested in superstar outfielder Juan Soto, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and Philadelphia Phillies. Despite this interest, there is growing skepticism among these teams about their chances of luring him away from the New York Yankees.
“Though there’s sure to be outside interest in 25-year-old superstar Juan Soto — the Mets, Dodgers, Phillies and Red Sox are obvious potential outside suitors — some rival GMs are starting to wonder if there’s a real chance he’d leave the Yankees,” Heyman wrote. “‘He’s going to be staying, no?’ one rival GM asked.”

Although this report doesn’t eliminate the Mets as contenders for Juan Soto, it does dampen the hopes of Mets fans. The executive quoted by Heyman may not be from New York’s front office, but the outlook for landing Soto seems more challenging. This might also reduce the chances for the other suitors – the Dodgers, Red Sox, and Phillies – who lack an owner like Steve Cohen.
Cohen, with a net worth of $16 billion, is the wealthiest owner in MLB and can offer Soto a record-setting contract. However, the Yankees, the most valuable team in the majors at $7.5 billion, can match or exceed any offer from Cohen. In comparison, the Mets are valued at $3 billion.
Despite both teams having significant financial power, the Yankees have an edge due to Soto’s growing relationship with the team. His MVP-caliber performance (.309/.433/.576, 18 home runs, 56 RBI, 186 wRC+, 4.6 fWAR) and strong bonds with teammates and fans could influence his decision if the Yankees and Mets reach a bidding stalemate.
The Mets can still make a strong impression by continuing their current success and aiming for the playoffs. Adding a talent like Soto could quickly make them World Series contenders. However, Soto is already making a similar impact with the Yankees this season.
In the end, the Mets have a good chance to sign Soto due to their financial resources and promising team. But currently, the Yankees are the favorites to secure his services.
