The Falcons are gearing up for their first preseason game in Miami this Friday, with the regular season approaching fast and high expectations for the campaign. Although there are still position battles to settle, a trade might be on the horizon. It seems likely that the Falcons have been exploring trade options for Taylor Heinicke.
With the signing of Kirk Cousins and the drafting of Michael Penix, Heinicke’s role as the veteran backup appears less essential. It would make sense for the Falcons to seek a Day 3 draft pick for him.
Seth Walder from ESPN proposed five preseason trades, including two involving the Falcons. One of these trades has Heinicke moving to the Lions.
**Lions Gain QB Insurance with Heinicke**
– **Lions receive:** QB Taylor Heinicke
– **Falcons receive:** 2025 seventh-round pick
The Falcons no longer need Heinicke, but the Lions could benefit from his experience. Detroit is currently relying on third-round pick Hendon Hooker, who missed his rookie season recovering from a torn ACL. Although Hooker has potential, Heinicke provides a more reliable backup option.
Additionally, Walder suggested the Falcons could address their pass rush issues by acquiring Baron Browning from the Broncos.
**Falcons Acquire Browning for Pass-Rush Boost**
– **Falcons receive:** Edge Baron Browning, 2025 sixth-round pick
– **Broncos receive:** 2025 fourth-round pick
Browning, a 2021 third-round pick, has recorded 9.5 sacks in his first two seasons. With one year remaining on his rookie deal, he could offer valuable pass-rush potential. Despite the crowded edge rusher group in Atlanta, acquiring Browning might help address their pass-rush concerns. However, the Falcons could also benefit more from adding a starting-caliber cornerback, especially if it costs a fourth-round pick.
