The competition for the backup quarterback role behind Tua Tagovailoa during the Miami Dolphins’ summer camp was fairly predictable. Mike White was among the final cuts, allowing the Dolphins to save $3.5 million in cap space while handing the backup duties to Skylar Thompson.

However, there’s speculation that the Dolphins might pursue an external option now that final cuts have been made.

One possibility could be targeting a familiar face from the AFC East, such as Bailey Zappe, who was recently waived by the New England Patriots. As a 2022 fourth-round pick, Zappe has shown potential and might not remain on the waiver wire for long.

Another option could be exploring a trade. ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi noted that the Cleveland Browns initially rostered four quarterbacks and are likely looking to trade one. This scenario could give the Dolphins a chance to acquire a player like Tyler Huntley or veteran Jameis Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick who is still only 30 years old.

While these aren’t the most thrilling prospects, and any new player would need time to learn Mike McDaniel’s system, the Dolphins might consider upgrading the backup quarterback position before Wednesday, especially given that last season was the first time Tagovailoa played a full year without significant issues.
