It’s that time of year when every NFL team technically has an equal shot at winning the Super Bowl, even if deep down, they know that’s not the case. It’s also when fans start dreaming up wild trade ideas, especially if they involve a star player in a perceived position of need.
Seattle Seahawks fans are all too familiar with this, as analysts and fans from other teams have been trying to orchestrate a DK Metcalf trade every offseason for about five years now. This year is no different, and the latest Metcalf trade proposal is completely unrealistic.
The folks at BVM Sportsdesk have floated the idea of a deal that would send DK Metcalf from Seattle to the Dallas Cowboys. They suggest that if the Seahawks’ playoff hopes fade, they might reconsider Metcalf’s future, especially with his contract expiring after 2025. The Cowboys, with an “all-in” mindset, might pursue Metcalf to bolster their offense alongside CeeDee Lamb. In return, the Seahawks could seek high-value draft picks and possibly additional players, making it a significant trade for both teams.
Why won’t this DK Metcalf trade happen?
First off, there isn’t an actual trade proposal—just a vague mention of Seattle seeking high-value picks and players. Secondly, like all the other absurd DK Metcalf trade ideas, there’s no compelling reason for the Seahawks to part with him. Sure, it makes sense for the Cowboys, who need receiver help, but it’s ridiculous from Seattle’s perspective.
Metcalf may not have reached his full potential yet, given his incredible athleticism, but that seems more like a failure of the coaching staff. While Pete Carroll deserves credit for the Legion of Boom era, that was a long time ago, and he hasn’t been able to help Metcalf develop discipline on the field.
Moreover, Metcalf is still only 26 and hasn’t had the chance to work with a truly gifted offensive play-caller (though that’s about to change with Ryan Grubb). Despite this, Metcalf has put up impressive numbers, most notably in 2021 when he recorded 12 touchdowns and 967 yards, even while playing on a broken foot for much of the season.
The only way the Seahawks would even consider trading Metcalf is if they completely tank the first half of the upcoming season and Metcalf does something truly terrible off the field. Unless both of these highly unlikely scenarios happen in the next two months, you can bet Metcalf will remain in a Seahawks uniform for as long as he plays in the NFL.
