With veteran James Bradberry on injured reserve and Avonte Maddox emerging as the top option at nickelback, the Philadelphia Eagles face a precarious situation at safety, where they are just one injury away from a potential crisis.
As the defense has struggled across the board in the first two weeks, general manager Howie Roseman might consider making a significant trade to bolster the secondary. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggested in his NFL Trade Big Board for Week 3 that the Eagles could be in the market for a major acquisition.
Budda Baker, a six-time Pro Bowl safety from the Arizona Cardinals, is considered one of the league’s most valuable trade assets. With Baker in a contract year, he would provide an elite one-year boost for teams aiming for the Super Bowl, especially leading up to the NFL’s trade deadline on November 5.
Knox highlighted how Baker could elevate the Eagles’ defense: “Baker is a valuable asset for any team looking to strengthen their secondary. However, acquiring him would likely require a contract extension. Baker has been a trade target since he requested a new deal or a trade last offseason, although he eventually received a pay increase for his final two years.”
Given the Eagles’ current secondary issues, pursuing Baker could be a strategic move. Although Philadelphia has a solid safety duo in C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Reed Blankenship, Baker’s versatility and ability to thrive in Vic Fangio’s complex coverage schemes could enhance the defense significantly.
In addition to his play-making skills, Baker would provide the Eagles with more options. Rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean, who struggled with missed practice time early in training camp, has been sidelined despite being healthy for over a month. Isaiah Rodgers and Kelee Ringo, other cornerbacks expected to play a role this season, have seen limited action.
The Eagles may be dissatisfied with their current depth in the secondary. A high-profile move like acquiring Baker could be just the shakeup they need.
