Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James has been suspended for one game without pay due to “repeated violations of playing rules aimed at protecting the health and safety of players,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The suspension follows James’ helmet-to-helmet hit on Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth during Sunday’s game, which resulted in a flag for unnecessary roughness. Despite the penalty, James argued that he was just trying to bring Freiermuth down and did not believe the hit was to the head or neck area.

NFL executive Jon Runyan issued a statement to James regarding the suspension, and Rapoport mentioned that James plans to appeal the decision. This suspension is the first of James’ six-year career, although he has previously been fined five times for unnecessary roughness, totaling $127,792 in penalties.
Ahead of the season, the NFL had sent warnings to over 20 players about its stricter stance on suspensions for repeat violations, but it appears James was not included on that list. Throughout his career, James has been a standout player for the Chargers, with last season marking a career-high 125 tackles, along with two sacks, an interception, and seven pass deflections. His absence will be felt as the Chargers prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
