Cam Akers is once again headed to Minnesota, as the Houston Texans have agreed to trade the running back to the Vikings. Along with Akers, Minnesota will receive a conditional seventh-round pick for 2026, while the Texans get a conditional sixth-round pick in the deal. This marks the second consecutive season in which the Vikings have traded for Akers.
Akers initially joined the Vikings last year through a trade with the Los Angeles Rams. In the 2023 season, he appeared in six games, rushing for 138 yards on 38 carries. After a brief stint with the Texans, who signed him during the offseason, Akers is now set to reunite with the Vikings.
Drafted by the Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Akers’ career faced a setback in 2021 when he suffered a torn Achilles. However, he made a remarkable return by the end of that season and contributed to the Rams’ Super Bowl victory. Over his NFL career, Akers has recorded 1,728 rushing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, 42 receptions, and 336 receiving yards in 41 games.
For the Vikings, Akers will add depth to a running back group led by Aaron Jones. Although Jones recently suffered a minor hip injury, Akers will likely serve as the team’s No. 2 back. Given his previous experience in head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system, Akers is expected to transition smoothly.
This trade gives Akers another opportunity to make an impact in Minnesota, and the Vikings, currently off to a 5-0 start, are hoping his presence will bolster their already strong backfield.
