After the Los Angeles Rams’ victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, head coach Sean McVay shared an update on rookie defensive tackle Braden Fiske’s condition, stating that Fiske experienced some back soreness following the game. Although McVay didn’t initially report any major injuries, he later revealed this concern during his Monday media session. As the Rams prepare for their Thursday matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, Fiske’s status remains uncertain, and McVay emphasized that they would monitor his availability closely.
The challenge lies in the short turnaround between games, giving Fiske limited time to recover from the discomfort he’s feeling. McVay mentioned that the team’s staff would evaluate Fiske’s condition over the next few days, leaving his participation in the upcoming game uncertain. Given the quick succession of games, there’s a possibility the Rams may decide to rest Fiske to avoid aggravating his back further.
The timing, however, may work in Fiske’s favor as the Rams will have a mini-bye following Thursday’s game. After facing the Vikings, they won’t play again until Week 9, giving Fiske and other banged-up players additional time to rest and recover before their next game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Fiske, a second-round pick, has been a solid contributor to the Rams’ defense this season. In his role as a starter on the defensive line, he has accumulated 20 total tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. His presence alongside fellow defensive tackle Kobie Turner has bolstered the Rams’ interior defense, making him a key player for the team. Should Fiske miss Thursday’s game, it could present a challenge for the Rams’ defense, though the extended break afterward provides a silver lining.
With his performance so far, Fiske has demonstrated his value as a key piece of the Rams’ defensive unit. His health will be critical for Los Angeles as they aim to keep their defense performing at a high level for the remainder of the season.
