The Washington Commanders have released former first-round pick Jamin Davis, who had transitioned from linebacker to defensive end this season under head coach Dan Quinn. Davis, drafted 19th overall in 2021, initially played as a middle linebacker but later moved to outside linebacker under previous head coach Ron Rivera. Throughout his three seasons with Washington, Davis played in 50 games, recording 282 tackles, seven sacks, and 21 tackles for loss. However, his production this season, with only 13 tackles and limited playing time, led to the Commanders parting ways with him.
In addition to releasing Davis, the Commanders made several roster moves, including the release of safety Sheldrick Redwine from the practice squad. They promoted safety Ben Nikkel and wide receiver Michael Strachan to the active roster to fill the gaps. Meanwhile, cornerback Kevon Seymour, who had been on the practice squad, received a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Seymour, a seasoned veteran with 66 games under his belt across multiple teams, will be eligible for reinstatement in December.
The Commanders also opened up a spot on their 53-man roster, which may be filled by rookie linebacker Jordan Magee, as his 21-day window to return from injured reserve was set to expire. These moves reflect Washington’s efforts to adjust its roster in the wake of injuries and underperformance, as they continue their 2024 campaign.
The decision to release Davis underscores the challenges that the former Kentucky standout faced in living up to his draft expectations, while also highlighting the evolving needs of the Commanders’ defense this season.
