For any Indianapolis Colts fan, the idea of adding Myles Garrett to the roster is exciting. Garrett, the Cleveland Browns’ defensive powerhouse, has solidified himself as one of the NFL’s elite defenders. Acquiring him would provide a tremendous boost to the Colts’ defensive line and could be a game-changer for Indianapolis, but it may not be a realistic possibility given several factors.
Garrett’s accomplishments showcase his potential impact. From his college years at Texas A&M, where he earned accolades like First Team All-SEC and the Bill Willis Trophy, to his consistent NFL performance since being drafted first overall in 2017, Garrett has dominated. Despite an early injury, he quickly made his mark, leading Cleveland in sacks as a rookie and making the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Over the next several years, he earned three first-team All-Pro titles, five Pro Bowl selections, and a Defensive Player of the Year award. Last year, Garrett’s 16-sack season helped propel the Browns to a playoff berth, affirming his value as an elite defensive force. This season, he’s continued to deliver solid numbers, with 17 tackles and four sacks, even as the Browns face struggles across the board.
As the Nov. 5 trade deadline nears, the Browns’ rocky season and recent trades, such as the move that sent receiver Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills, have sparked speculation about a potential rebuild. With the team at a disappointing 1-6 and quarterback Deshaun Watson out for the year, it’s plausible that the Browns may entertain offers for their top players. Garrett would likely command a high price, but the Colts would benefit from the lift he could provide to their pass rush. Currently ranked 24th in the league for sacks, Indianapolis could benefit from Garrett’s defensive presence alongside DeForest Buckner and rookie Laiatu Latu, especially as Buckner recovers from an injury. Garrett’s presence would help strengthen a Colts defense that has struggled with consistency this season.
If the Browns do entertain offers, the Detroit Lions—at 5-1 and a clear Super Bowl contender—are considered likely suitors, particularly in light of Aidan Hutchinson’s recent injury. Other contenders with a greater need for an elite edge rusher might also show interest. Although Colts fans might hope for a surprise deal, the high cost of Garrett’s contract (which guarantees him at least $19 million per season until 2026) and the significant draft picks required to complete such a trade could deter Indianapolis. Colts general manager Chris Ballard is known for his conservative approach to trades, preferring long-term development over aggressive acquisitions.
While it’s easy to imagine Garrett in a Colts jersey, the combination of Garrett’s contract, his importance to the Browns, and the Colts’ management style make such a deal improbable. Colts fans can keep dreaming, though—landing Garrett would unquestionably transform their defense and make a playoff run more attainable.
