The Pittsburgh Steelers have started the 2024 season strong, yet issues at wide receiver persist, stirring discussions among fans and analysts alike. The departure of Diontae Johnson, traded to the Carolina Panthers, has left a notable void in the offense. This move, one of the first major decisions by Steelers General Manager Omar Khan, has sparked debate as the team now lacks a solid partner for George Pickens. While the Steelers have explored trade options, no significant moves have been made to fill this gap. With the trade deadline looming on November 5, Steelers fans are eagerly awaiting Khan’s next steps to address this need.
Given the deadline pressure, acquiring a quality pass-catcher could provide a substantial boost to the offense. Even a modest addition might complement Pickens and enhance the wide receiver unit. However, options are limited, and viable candidates are dwindling.
Among potential trade targets, Darius Slayton from the New York Giants stands out. With the recent injuries to high-profile receivers like Cooper Kupp and Christian Kirk, Slayton has become a more prominent option. The Steelers will get a firsthand look at him during their Week 8 matchup on Monday Night Football. Currently, Slayton is playing behind Giants’ starters Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson. While not a superstar, he’s posted respectable stats, totaling 25 catches for 312 yards and a touchdown this season, and his contract presents minimal financial risk for Pittsburgh.
Another intriguing candidate is Jakobi Meyers from the Las Vegas Raiders. Though the Raiders recently traded away Davante Adams, they could still be open to dealing Meyers, especially given their disappointing 2-6 record and an uncertain quarterback situation. Meyers’ stats (31 catches for 325 yards and two touchdowns) reflect a strong season so far, and his contract extends through 2025, making him more than just a short-term rental. However, it’s uncertain whether the Raiders are willing to part with two of their primary receivers in such quick succession.
Khan could also explore options within the New England Patriots, who are reportedly open to moving Kendrick Bourne or KJ Osborn. Bourne returned in early October from an ACL injury that sidelined him last season, while Osborn has underperformed with only seven catches for 57 yards. Given the Patriots’ struggles this season and rookie quarterback Drake Maye’s inconsistent play, the Steelers might see potential in either of these receivers. Yet, both come with risk, and their limited impact so far raises questions about the benefit of such a trade.
For the Steelers, the current trade market seems lackluster. The more appealing targets, like Adams and Brandon Aiyuk, have either been dealt or stayed put, while others have sustained injuries. If Khan can find a worthwhile trade, it could help solidify the team’s playoff chances. However, without new names emerging on the market, Pittsburgh’s wide receiver options remain limited as the deadline approaches.
