The Atlanta Braves were initially linked to free agent shortstop Willy Adames of the Milwaukee Brewers, but their pursuit fell short as Adames has reportedly agreed to a nearly $200 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. This leaves the Braves still searching for a solution to their shortstop dilemma, especially after Orlando Arcia’s struggles culminated in a disappointing 2024 season. With limited options on the market, Atlanta might need to explore creative alternatives to address the position.
One unconventional idea comes from FanSided’s Christopher Kline, who suggests the Braves consider pursuing Houston Astros free agent Alex Bregman. According to Spotrac, Bregman is projected to sign a four-year, $119 million deal, though recent reports indicate his price tag could approach $200 million, similar to Adames’ deal. Kline acknowledges that this scenario is unlikely but argues that Bregman could be a strong target for Atlanta.
“We should preface this by saying it almost definitely won’t happen, but there’s a strong case for Alex Bregman as a top Braves target,” Kline writes. “His price tag could match or exceed Adames’ $182 million, so tread carefully, but Bregman is a two-time World Series champion with nearly a decade of postseason experience. For an Atlanta team aiming to reach the pinnacle, that kind of pedigree should be appealing.”
The main obstacle with pursuing Bregman is his position. Bregman has primarily played third base throughout his career and is not a natural shortstop. However, reports suggest he might be open to switching positions for the right opportunity. If the Braves were to acquire Bregman, he could potentially move to second base while Ozzie Albies shifts over to shortstop, creating a new dynamic in the infield.
Despite Bregman’s championship experience and offensive talent, committing nearly $200 million to a 30-year-old player is a significant gamble. Moreover, the Braves would likely face stiff competition from aggressive suitors such as the Astros, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets, who are expected to heavily pursue Bregman in free agency.
While Atlanta must find a solution to its shortstop issue, it remains uncertain if Bregman is the answer given his cost, age, and position. The Braves may need to weigh other options carefully as they navigate this critical offseason decision.
